How to Choose a Desk Lamp for Working and Reading

A desk lamp has one job, which is to put light on the task without putting light in your eyes. Four decisions cover it.

Brightness

A home office wants roughly 60 to 80 foot candles at the desk surface. In practice, a desk lamp delivering 400 to 800 lumens onto a work area, on top of decent ambient room light, is comfortable for most people. Detailed work such as sewing, model making or reading fine print wants the upper end, or a lamp with a dimmer so you can push it when you need to.

Colour temperature

  • 2700K to 3000K: warm, relaxing, good for evening reading, slightly softer on detail
  • 3500K to 4000K: neutral, the best all round choice for a work desk
  • 5000K and above: cool daylight, sharpest for colour accuracy and fine detail, harsh for long evening sessions

If the lamp offers adjustable colour temperature, use the cooler setting during the day and the warmer setting after dark. That single habit does more for evening comfort than any other feature.

Glare control matters more than power

You should be able to sit normally and not see the bulb or the bright LED strip directly. Look for a deep shade, a diffuser panel or a recessed source. A bare bright LED in an open head will produce discomfort within an hour no matter how good the numbers look.

Position the lamp on the opposite side from your writing hand, so your hand does not cast a shadow across the page. For a screen, place it to the side rather than behind the monitor to avoid reflections.

Arm type

  • Fixed neck: simplest and steadiest, fine if your desk layout never changes
  • Gooseneck: easy small adjustments, can droop over time under a heavy head
  • Spring balanced swing arm: the best for real adjustability, holds position, takes more desk depth
  • Clamp mount: frees the desktop entirely, needs a suitable edge thickness

Check the CRI

Colour rendering index above 90 means colours look true. It matters for anything visual, from makeup to painting to checking a fabric swatch, and it costs very little extra.
