How to Choose a Coffee Table
A coffee table gets judged by looks and used by legs. Three numbers decide whether it works.
Height
Aim within 2 in of the sofa seat height, ideally 1 to 2 in below it. Most sofa seats sit 17 to 19 in from the floor, so most coffee tables land at 16 to 18 in. A table taller than the seat blocks the view and feels like a barrier. Much lower and you have to reach down awkwardly for a mug.
Length
Roughly two thirds the length of the sofa. An 84 in sofa wants a table around 48 to 56 in. Shorter than half the sofa length looks lost. Longer than the sofa looks like it wandered in from another room.
Clearance
- 14 to 18 in between the sofa front and the table edge. Under 14 in and knees hit. Over 18 in and you cannot reach a drink.
- 30 in of walking space around the outside where a path runs.
- At least 24 in between the table and any other furniture.
Shape by room
- Rectangle: the default, suits a long sofa and a rectangular rug.
- Oval: same footprint as a rectangle without the sharp corners. The right answer in a small room or with children.
- Round: excellent in a narrow room or with an L shaped sectional, because there is no corner to walk into.
- Square: pairs with a sectional or a large square seating group, needs a generous room.
- Two small tables or nesting tables: flexible, easy to move for guests, good where the room does double duty.
Material and top choices
Glass keeps a small room visually open but shows every fingerprint. Solid wood forgives daily use and can be sanded. Stone looks substantial and is very heavy, so check the floor and whether you can move it to vacuum. A lift top or a table with a lower shelf earns its place in a room short on storage.
